9 Sikh was then deployed in the Naougam sub-sector under 104 Brigade/19 Divison, northwest of Srinagar. The Sikh soldiers, well known for their valour across the world, stood up to the occasion and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy and captured 45 sq km in just 10 days.

About the Author
Lt Col M K Gupta Ray was born on 23rd Oct 1946 in Dhaka District of undivided India. After partition, he migrated to Kolkata in 1950 along with his parents and other siblings, leaving everything behind. New humble life began at Kolkata in a very modest way. He graduated from Kolkata University and was commissioned in the army on 12 Jan 1969 and retired on 25th May 1999. He had the honour of participating in 1971 Bangladesh war and Operation Pawan in Srilanka in Oct 1887.
In 1971 Bangladesh War with 9 Sikh, as a captain, he participated in various battalion operations and also became responsible to maintain a long supply line. His battalion had a honour of capturing 45 sqkm in a span of ten days in a very difficult area with very limited troops and resources. In OP Pawan, leading from the front he and his battalion, 16 Sikh, had cleared major part of Jaffna within 7 days from date of landing in Pallali airport, from the clutches of LTTE, while advance of all other brigades were halted by LTTE. The whole operation was successfully conducted with one fourth of the authorized troops and minimum logistics under the most unusual and difficult situation.
He had held number of staff appointments from Battalion, Brigade, Division, Corps to Command Headquarters in all the branches i.e. Administration, logistic and operational. He has authored two books: Srilanka Misadventure along with Lt Col Goutam Das and Birth of a Nation on 1971 Bangladesh war by himself.
Presently he is settled in Pune leading a retired life. He indulges himself in writing articles and taking issue based lectures and on soft skill.
